When Luann Fee was in high school she took a nutrition class that would affect the rest of her life. The teacher suggested that Luann consider majoring in dietetics, and she introduced Luann to the school’s foodservice director, Pat DeGore. Four years later, while studying at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Luann returned to serve an internship under Pat, who then helped her land her first job. Pat continued to mentor Luann, and they maintained their friendship for years, working on many SNAPA and PRFSD projects together.

Mark Ott has had many types of jobs in the food industry, including dairy herd management, wine production, and food broker. Before becoming a school foodservice director, he also managed dining services for a small university, a retirement community, and the regional facility of a major corporation.

Linda Hunter started out thinking she wanted to be a nurse, so she studied nursing in college. During her second year, however, she began to question whether nursing was the right career for her. Linda found her answer when she dropped out of school and took a job as a nurse’s aide. This experience helped her to decide that she didn’t really want to be a nurse. At the same time, she recognized her growing interest in working in a kitchen. Thus inspired, she returned to college for a degree in food and nutrition. After graduating and then working in a department store, another nursing home, and a YMCA, Linda found herself working in her old high school cafeteria.

After earning her degree from the Culinary Institute of America, Janet Whipple accrued over 30 years’ experience in the foodservice field. After a few stints in restaurants and catering, Janet entered school foodservice when she accepted a position as Assistant Food Service Director for the large urban school district in Scranton. Several years later Janet became the Food Service Director for the Wyoming ASD, where she managed and improved department operations. Along the way Janet earned a degree in Business Administration from Wilkes University, and her district surely benefited from her expertise in this area.

Barbara Nissel has obtained degrees in education and nutrition from Drexel University and Immaculata College. Before she became Great Valley’s Food Service Supervisor in 1988 she had been a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, a restaurant operator, and a consultant to the American Heart Association. These career experiences in public service, business, and education, along with her academic studies, have provided Barbara with a terrific combination of qualifications for successfully taking charge of a school district’s food service department.

Lynn Huggins now has over ten years of experience as a school food service director, but she started out on a different path. She left an office job when her increasing interests in health and fitness prompted her to study dietetics. When she was newly graduated with Registered Dietetic Technician (DTR) certification, Lynn was quickly hired by a hospital. Her duties there included clinical patient screenings and evaluations along with supervising foodservice operations. While Lynn enjoyed this work and the environment, she did not find the schedule to her liking. Noticing a school food service “help wanted” ad in the newspaper, Lynn got to thinking that she could pursue her interests with more manageable hours if she worked in a school rather than a hospital. She states that “once I entered school food service I never looked back, and I am happy that my career choices landed me where I am today.”

After attending business school and participating in the management of several private businesses, Jenelle Himmelreich began her career in food service as a dietitian’s assistant in a small rehab hospital. Looking for a bigger challenge, she worked her way up to the food service director position within a short period of time. When she became restless after several years at the hospital, she eyed the food service director position at the Governor Mifflin SD. When it became available, she applied and was hired. She has now been working for Governor Mifflin SD more than six years, and she says she still loves the challenges of school foodservice: “It keeps things interesting!”

After nearly 20 years serving as a dietetic technician in a hospital, Sue Ayres decided she was ready for a change. The Dallastown Area School District’s foodservice director position opened up at the same time, so Sue applied for it. She got the job, and now she’s been with the district for over 20 years.

Daria Schneider’s parents indirectly led her to her career in school foodservice. To earn a Girl Scout badge, Daria learned to cook from her mother, who made nearly all family meals from scratch. Food played a focal role in her family’s life back then; all of their letters to Daria when she was at camp in the 5th grade included descriptions of the meals they were eating back home. When Daria was in high school and struggling to pinpoint her career interests, her “Father Knew Best” and suggested that she might want to study nutrition in college. A physician, he recognized the important connection between nutrition and health – and he knew Daria liked to cook, just as her mom did.

Jeanne Kandra has been the food service director for the Donegal School District since 2002. Before she began working in the public school system, Jeanne studied for several years at the college level, and then she worked in private industry for over 20 years. She is a registered dietitian with a degree in Food Service Administration and another in Food Science and Human Nutrition. She has also studied toward an advanced degree in Health Education. Her career includes award-winning work as the food service director for two hospitals, coordinating training activities for the Philadelphia School District, and managing a test kitchen as a Consumer Foods Specialist for the Hershey Foods Corporation.
