Janet Mullaney is the School Food Service Director at Wattsburg Area School District, a rural district in Erie County. Janet has been in school food service for 9 years and feels that the breakfast programs at Wattsburg Area School District are especially important because of the one-hour bus ride that many students have before arriving at school. As a result, many of the students arrive at school hungry and cannot concentrate well.

When Janet arrived at Wattsburg Area School District, she inherited the breakfast programs started by the previous School Food Service Director, but she soon made some changes and improvements in the programs. These improvements have included adding nutritious “Grab ‘n Go” items such as breakfast sandwiches, wraps, yogurt, and fruit bars. In the elementary school a traditional style of breakfast service is used because Janet feels the students enjoy eating traditional style in the cafeteria. Breakfast participants were usually served cold ceral before her arrival, but Janet quickly extended the menu to incorporate more hot food items. Among the students’ favorites are French toast sticks, pancakes, and Belgian waffles.

Janet focuses her marketing strategies on the elementary school students because it is her belief that if you can encourage the students to start the healthy breakfast-eating habit early, they will continue to participate in middle and high school. Some ways that Janet Mullaney has promoted breakfast to the elementary students is by allowing them to invite their parents to breakfast and presenting older student athletes and cheerleaders from the high school to serve as role models. Janet feels that it is important to lead your marketing strategies with a positive attitude and you will have a positive outcome and product.

Janet’s future plans for the breakfast program include trying to incorporate a curbside delivery breakfast to the Vo-Tech students, so they can also receive a healthy breakfast before going to Vo-Tech.

Janet is happy to be a part of the Breakfast Brigade and hopes to help others realize the importance of breakfast programs. She also hopes others will learn lessons that she has learned – that much can be accomplished by working as a team, and that when students, staff, administrators, parents, and teachers work hard together it pays off.
